‘Modest dressing’ blogs on the rise

Internet news blog Get Off My Internets reports that Mormons are increasingly getting into the fashion blogging game.

Sites such as Clothed Much, which seems to be one of the religious community's most popular style blogs, regularly post outfits that are considered "modest" within its moral framework, even though these guidelines don't always seem to be clearly defiend.

Writes Get Off My Internets: "The rules for what are and are not modest are confusing if you start going through various blogs, but from what I can tell, it generally means no skirts above the knee, no cleavage and no spaghetti strap tops. Oh, and no bikinis. And sometimes no makeup or heels over 2-3 inches."

Clothed Much, for instance, doesn't shy away from tight jeans and pencil skirts, but in other cases, such as on the More Modern Modesty blog, just wearing a brooch was considered "immodest" by some commenters.

Other religious communities are also increasingly involved in the fashion industry, with 'Islamified' fast fashion label Maysaa gaining popularity among Muslim women, for instance.

Miuccia Prada and Elsa Schiaparelli to be focus of next Met exhibit

The works of the two Italian designers will engage in an "anachronistic conversation" as part of the New York Metropolitan Costume Institue's fashion exhibition next year.

According to Women's Wear Daily, the reason to stage an exhibit of the late Schiaparelli now is that the Institute was able to obtain large parts of the designer's archives. "Once we got Schiaparelli as the core part of what we wanted to do, it became a logical jump to Miuccia," one of the organizers told the paper. "They are both Italian women, and even though Miuccia might not describe herself as a feminist, what we see is these two very strong women with a very strong aesthetic."

The connection between Schiaparelli's work of the 1920s-1950s and that of Prada might not seem evident at first glance, but a spokesperson for the Met insisted that "they are both very provocative for their time...we thought it would be very interesting to pit these two women together in an anachronistic conversation."

In any case, Australian film director Baz Luhrmann -- who has been chosen as the creative director for the exhibit, while star of his The Great Gatsby movie Carey Mulligan will chair with Prada and Vogue's Anna Wintour -- will have a hard time paralleling the record-breaking success of Alexander McQueen's "Savage Beauty" display at the Institute that drew more than 600,000 visitors this year.

Vera Wang’s Witchy Woman

It was a dark moment for brides as Vera Wang showed some of her best bridal work in a figurative ode to witchcraft to at her new studio in New York on Sunday, Oct. 16.

The bridal gown designer and everything-wedding-authority showed 15 breathtaking looks for Fall 2012 in just two simple tones - black and nude. Inspired by undergarments in this color combination, Wang hit the mark - as few things are sexier to accentuate a woman than nude chiffon, serving as a second skin, and black lace, forming a seductive peek-a-boo veil for a see-through illusion. This was a perfect combination for that alternative, evening event bride who's not afraid to veer off the beaten path and make her own personalized nuptial look.

Without a white dress in sight, Wang managed to exude the elegance and antiquity of the Victorian gothic while infusing each gown with a sense of modernism and mystery. Halter neck lines, and T-strapped backs were novel contours that functioned as a sensuous deviation from the standard strapless look. Peplum bustiers and sheared flange skirts gave way to a beautiful flowing shape that cascaded downward with a finishing light and airy touch.

Wang once again secured her relevance in the bridal industry, not that anyone would question her skills - but don't be surprised to see any of these spell-casting gowns, most notably the nude strapless French tulle ballgown with hand-pieced Chantilly lace applique, sooner on the red carpet than down the aisle.

Haute couture saved by Middle Eastern socialites

While designers are trying to target Western customers with affordable fashion chain collaborations or diffusion lines, their haute couture branches are almost single-handedly being kept alive by clients in the wealthy Gulf countries, reports the UK Telegraph.

"I want to be different from others," a frequent buyer explains. "What I want is unique pieces, extravagant and chic. I do not want to pay 5,000 or 6,000 euros for a dress, as it happened to me with a Pucci outfit recently, and see it on somebody else the same evening."

For these lucky few, a calendar full of weddings and other high-profile social events demands a wardrobe of one-off dresses by the likes of Christian Dior, Stephane Rolland, Valentino and Chanel, which can cost around $75,000 a piece. "I have known of many occasions when a couturier will be invited to a private home for a showing. The hostess will buy maybe 20, 30 couture outfits for a season," Simon Lock, a creative director of Dubai Fashion Week, told the newspaper.

He adds: "I had the opportunity to see a wedding that was recently held here in Dubai. 4,000 women were invited to the reception and everybody in the room was wearing haute couture."

Come December, you will be able to dress like Lisbeth Salander, the dark and urban anti-heroine of David Fincher's version of The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo.

Working together with the film's costume designer Trish Summerville, H&M will release a 30-piece collection consisting of leather jackets and pants, torn jeans and slouchy hoodies in a mainly black, grey, and worn-white color palette.

"Salander's look is very real and very lived in, with pieces that her character has worn for a long time, like her jackets that act as her armour to shield her from the world. I wanted the collection to have the essence and strength of Salander, with a fashion edge...," Summerville said in a statement.

"The clothes are all about the attitude -- they have a toughness to them but they are also really flattering," added Anna Norling, designer for H&M's Divided range, which will host the collaboration.

Launching exclusively at Parisian concept store Colette on November 28, the collection will be available worldwide and online from December 14.

COPENHAGEN, Denmark (AP) — Fashion icon Margit Brandt, whose simple cuts and 1960s miniskirts marked one of the first international breakthroughs for Danish designs, has died. She was 66.

Margit Brandt brand manager Maria Stubben told The Associated Press Monday that the Denmark-born designer died earlier in the day following a long fight against lung disease.

Brandt presented the first collection of her brand B-age in 1965. The short and close-fitted garments stood out from other designs of the time and B-age stores were quickly opened in Paris, Barcelona, Tokyo, San Francisco, New York and London.

The designer is survived by her husband Erik Brandt and their two daughters, Emilie and Julie.

Funeral arrangements weren't immediately known.

Winfrey to interview Ralph Lauren live in NYC

NEW YORK (AP) — When Ralph Lauren sits down for a little chat Monday night with Oprah Winfrey, they'll pick up a discussion they started on TV back in the spring, when the fashion designer helped close out Winfrey's long-running talk show with an exclusive peek inside his Colorado estate.

But this time, their talk about Lauren's life, career and commitment to cancer causes will be done in front of a sold-out crowd of arts patrons at Lincoln Center and a celebrity guest list expected to include Jerry Seinfeld, Martha Stewart, Tom Brokaw, Naomi Watts and Anna Wintour.

Proceeds from the event will benefit Lauren's cancer care center in East Harlem, along with Lincoln Center itself.

Produced by Tony Award winner Darren Bagert, the multimedia presentation reinforces the Upper West Side venue as a fashion-industry destination. It's where most of the city's designers — although not Lauren — present their seasonal collections at New York Fashion Week.

Meanwhile, Mayor Michael Bloomberg declared Monday as The Ralph Lauren Center for Cancer Care and Prevention Day.

Winfrey was expected to wear a custom-made gown by Lauren.

Back in May, Lauren told Winfrey during their televised interview that he considered becoming a baseball player, a basketball player, a cowboy, a dancer — even Batman — before settling on fashion as his livelihood. He said he was drawn to Batman because of "the ability to stay young, the ability to enjoy what you enjoyed when you were a kid, not to give up the hope and excitement."

The Italian design duo has released a new promotional video for its The One fragrance, starring the Hollywood actress.

Directed by Jean-Baptiste Mondino and set against the musical background of 'A Place in the Sun' by Franz Waxman, performed by the National Philharmonic Orchestra, the filmed ad shows Johansson "revealing the provocative yet effortless femininity of the eternal diva."

Being interviewed by journalists, she offers statements such as: "I had an Italian boyfriend once -- his mother broke up with me," or: "How did I know it was a lie? Because I read it in your newspaper." But the sauciest bit of the clip starring Johansson -- whose nude photos just got leaked on the internet -- must be when she says: "A girl has to have a private life, keeps the public interested."
